Pa, Ponies & Photoshop

The following pictures were taken yesterday during and after our ride up the mountain. We ran into Pa & Chris, my good friends and neighbors.

And this photo was taken after our ride of the Stillwater Ranch ponies!

I brought both pictures out of Lightroom and into Photoshop and dodged, burned, blurred and applied the tonal contrast filter from Nik Effects; it was sorta cloudy and overcast so I think this really brings out the subjects in each photo.

It was a gorgeous spring like day so I grabbed the camera to take with me to the barn. The horses had their blankets on and I thought it would probably feel really nice to have the warmth of the sun on their backs instead of their blankets.

As I was grooming Indy someone fired off a round in the woods and I was lucky enough to get this shot,her ears forward, eyes wide and body alert.

I played around with it in CS3 using some brushes, the dodge tool and a couple of Nik filters.

I really love how this one turned out…it is now my favorite picture I have of her.

It must be the rain or maybe I’ve just come to find a new passion. Here is an old photo of my step mom and dad from 6 years ago. I only had the 600×480 version but I brought it into Photoshop and changed the resolution so I could have a larger version for painting.

I really love how the expressions stayed the same but I really liked how it brought out the nice coolpastels…my dad’s right cheek was a little tricky but I think it came out really special, al least to me

Another experiment with an old photo…I loved how the shadows and highlights came into effect once I started adjusting in Lightroom. I then brought it into CS3 and did a little pixel bending and painting

Bovine – Smudge Painting

Bovine Painting

This was done entirely in Photoshop, using the smudge, dodge and paint brush. I had taken the photo in a low light situation with my Nikon D80 and Nikkor 70-300mm. His eyes were really what drew me into him from the herd of cattle he was standing with.

Initially I wanted to remove the tag, but after looking and working with the image I decided I liked the balance and color it brought to the image.

I was playing around with an old photo of Rick’s and came up with this really dark but moody effect. I messed with the development settings in Lightroom and then brought it into CS3 for a paint/smudge job! The title reflects his thoughts on the final piece…I think if the Sopranos comes back to HBO he will definately audition.

Below is the original and my interpretation…enjoy!

A quick smudge painting of Tuki…did same sort of technique as previous post but really over did the highlights to give it a metallic look.

I’ve been playing around with Adobe Lightroom’s development and Photoshop’s painting features and am really getting a knack for this new style that is developing…here is one from today; worked on it off and on throughout the day and was going to add horses, chipmunks, etc. to it and decided that it looked just fine the way I was without anything else.

I haven’t done anything artistic in a long time so after watching some tutorials that Scott Kelby recently did I am feeling inspired.

Messed around with the development settings in Lightroom then smudge painted in Photoshop. I really like the grungy effect and saturated colors on these.

I bought a few painting with Photoshop/Corel Dvds to help spark my creative side especially when the weather doesn’t permit outdoor photography. I started with Susi Lawson’s “The Fine Art of Photoshop” a few nights back and thought today would be a good day to try out what I’ve been learning.

Now I’m by no ways yet up to her caliber but I liked how my “Lil Upstart” turned out…

The source and inspiration for this was taken from a photograph of a foal just a few days old in the stall with his mama.

Ok, so this time I took my time and really applied myself…still need to perfect brush strokes, etc…but I liked how this turned out soo much that I am looking for a way to get it printed on canvas.

BTW, Smaller versions don’t show the brush stroke details as much as I would like…
